Imagine, you have everything packed, you arrive at the airport

BUT IT’S CALCULATED ACCORDING TO THE ACTUAL FLIGHT DISTANCE!

First of all, that regulation applies only to flights that started or landed in the EU.
If the flight started outside the EU, the operating airline has to have its HQ within the Union.
 
The aircraft has to arrive 3 hours or later at its final destination.
In that case, you might be entitled to a compensation payment from up to 600 EUR.
 
Furthermore, if the airline did not inform you more than 2 weeks before departure about the cancellation of your flight, you might be entitled to financial compensation as well.

FACTS AND FIGURES

  • Compensation of 250 EUR for flight up to 1,500 km

  • Compensation of 400 EUR for flight up to 3,500 km

  • Compensation of 600 EUR for flight longer than 3,500 km

But pay attention: the national legislation might differ slightly. For instance, in Germany airline passengers can claim their compensation for up to 3 years retrospectively, but in Spain, it is 10 years.
